Let's go to camp.
#069
Since 2017, I’ve been coming to our friends’ camp in Webster County nearly every Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends. My wife has been coming up here even longer, but since we met, it’s been something we’ve looked forward to together.
Situated near the Nicholas and Webster county lines, the old farmhouse has become a staple in our lives at least three times a year. In the early days, there was zero internet or cell service. If you wanted to make a call, you had to walk out to the edge of the field, stand on one foot, and hold your mouth just right in order to get a call to go through. Today, I’m connected to Starlink writing this dispatch from the place we lovingly call Camp Cranberry.
This morning, four of us went down to the Cranberry River and worked the trout for several hours. I caught one, a rainbow trout, and would’ve enjoyed it just as much if I’d come away empty handed. We’ll have plenty of trout for the grill tomorrow night.
Earlier this week, I caught a good deal on Marketplace and drove to Yellow Springs, Ohio to pick up a trailer. I’ve been looking for something long enough to haul my tractor and brush hog and this fits the bill. I had a bit of an adventure getting it home, but that’s a story for another time.
For a 14 year-old trailer, it’s in great shape. I need to rewire the lights, add a chain box, and get a spare tire, as well as title it and get a plate for it. I didn’t grow up backing trailers or hauling equipment, but I figure the only way to learn is to jump right in (safely, of course).
I hope you and yours have a great Memorial Day weekend. Please be careful and take good care of each other. Thanks for reading along this week and for your continued support.
From camp,
- Roger

my father grew up in a little town in southwest VA called Troutdale in Grayson Co., named for its wonderful Trout streams. That's where I learned to fish as a child. Still remember the smell and the taste of pan fried trout for breakfast.
yum. fresh trout. i am now inspired to spend a weekend up near the cranberry river...soon.
