Prime time.
#077
Saturday morning, I decided to take the side-by-side on the backroads to Boone County. I rode about 40 miles roundtrip and stopped to make a few pictures along the way including one of this doe and her fawn in kudzu across from the Big Coal River. The same image below is zoomed in at 200%.
I recently picked up a Fujifilm GF 80mm 1.7 lens for my Fuji GFX camera, so I’ve been trying to make some pictures with it and get more familiar with the focal length. I’ve worked with prime lenses for most of my time as a photographer, so it’s nice to work with a fast prime, autofocus lens on a medium format body.
The images above and below are all within a couple of days of each other this past week.
I’ll share more images as I continue to work with this lens, but so far, I’m really impressed with it.
Earlier today, I got some much-needed mowing done on our property. Behind our cabin (the project cabin), I noticed a small box turtle who was stuck in a hole where an old septic tank used to be. I was able to get him out and released him a good distance from the hole.
Yesterday, I harvested the first cucumbers from the garden. Green beans are coming in as are tomatoes and peppers. I’ll be making pickles in no time!
The image I shared last week of the two fawns was seen by nearly three quarters of a million people on Instagram. I wasn’t prepared for that kind of response, but I’m glad the photograph seemed to resonate with folks.
As always, thanks for reading my newsletter and sharing with those you think might find it interesting. I hope summer is treating you well and that you’ve been able to get outside a bit.
Take care,
- Roger

Thanks for making me always feel connected to home. Your images are beautiful. Turtle love!
Was in your neck of the woods last week. Had to go to Wheeling, decided to take the long way and drive up through Logan and Charleston as it’s been more than 30 years since I’ve traveled those parts of 119.
Lot more red lights now and surprised at the growth around Logan and Chapmanville - at least along the highway.
